Prospero uses a metaphor to tell daughter Miranda that Antonio and Alonso tried to manipulate people’s thoughts and opinions – "with colours fairer painted their foul deeds." Conscious of how the people would view their behavior, they tried to make his "foul" treachery appear "fairer" that it was.
