The Tempest, Act 2, Scene 2. Caliban pledges an oath of allegiance to Stephano, after imbibing liquor that he believes came from the gods, Stephano being one. There is a strong irony running through this scene of swearing devotion to this new "god," given Caliban’s history of violent rejection of Prospero’s imperialism and enslavement of him.
