The Iliad, Book 15, line 226. Poseidon speaks about how the world was split three ways for the sons of Cronus – Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. The brothers drew lots for what realm they received. Zeus drew the heavens, the clouds and sky. Poseidon the sea. And Hades the land of the dead.
