The wine-dark sea.

– Homer

The Iliad, Book 7, line 102. Homer uses this phrase on a number of occasions in his epic poem. The Aegean is no less blue or blue-green than any other sea, so Homer’s phrase has long puzzled scholars. Some speculate that perhaps the wine the Greeks drank at the time may indeed have been colored blue, through the addition of alkaline water.
