The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 26. Tom Joad says this after Ma remarks that he is going to scar pretty badly. Tom received a head injury while making his escape after killing Jim Casy’s murderer. Since his injury makes him recognizable to police, he has to hide until it heals.
