The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 20. Jim Casy tells Tom Joad to flee after a deputy sheriff is knocked out and he, Casy, will assume all blame for the crime. Casy knows that Tom has broken parole, if arrested this would send straight back to prison. From being a former preacher, Casy has now found his calling through the ministry of self-sacrifice and giving comfort to migrants.
