"S’pose you was cookin’ a stew an’ a bunch of little fellas stood aroun’ moonin’, what’d you do? We didn’t have enough, but you can’t keep it when they look at ya like that."

– John Steinbeck

The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 20. Ma Joad says this to a woman who berates her for feeding stew to her children. The woman’s little boy came into her smelling of stew and asking why they didn’t have stew. But Ma believes that we have a responsibility to the wider community, where those who have food share with those who don’t.
