He was a sharp-faced, lean young man of a Texas strain, and his pale blue eyes were sometimes dangerous and sometimes kindly, and sometimes frightened. He was a good hard worker and would make a good husband. He drank enough, but not too much; fought when it was required of him; and never boasted. He sat quietly in a gathering and yet managed to be there and to be recognized.

The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 10. This is one of the novel’s best descriptions of Rose of Sharon’s young husband Connie. He is said to be a good husband and hard worker, can hold his liquor and lives up to his male role requirement of fighting when he is called upon.
