"Pu-raise Gawd fur vittory!"

– John Steinbeck

The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 8. These are the first words that Granma Joad speaks in the book. She utters them out excitedly as she runs to greet Tom, who is just out of jail. Most of Tom’s family assume that he broke out of jail, rather than being released on parole. Granma is a highly religious person, as her first comment makes clear. She praises God quite a bit in the novel.
