The Crucible, Act 2. Hale argues with Proctor that Tituba, Sarah Good and numerous others have confessed to dealing with the Devil. He finds it hard to believe that people who are innocent would confess. But Proctor counters saying that if people are hanged for denying witchcraft, the innocent will confess to avoid hanging.
