MARY WARREN: I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing.
ELIZABETH: Why, thank you, it’s a fair poppet.

– Arthur Miller

The Crucible, Act 2. Mary Warren makes a gift of a what seems a harmless poppet or doll to her employer Elizabeth Proctor. The child’s toy, which Mary made while in the court that day, will assume a sinister role in the play. Abigail will claim that Elizabeth has been using it like a voodoo doll to injure her. It will form the basis of accusations of witchcraft by Abby against Elizabeth.
