She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!…She comes to me every night to go and drink blood!
– Arthur Miller
The Crucible, Act 1. Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft and of coming to her every night to drink blood. Abby lies in order to cover up her own wrongdoings. She scapegoats Tituba to deflect from her own involvement in witchcraft in the woods, where she drank blood as a charm to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abby’s accusation in this early scene provides the spark that ignites the fire of hysteria that leads to the Salem witch hunt, in which many good and innocent people are condemned and sentenced to death.
