For me, it is good to be vulnerable. It makes me nice
weak
sometimes, but in a good way, not a tragic way.

To prepare for the part [in Two Women], I opened the sluices
of my memory, letting the bombing raids, the nights in the tunnel,
the killings, the rapes and starvation and inhumanity wash back
over me. I particularly concentrated on my mother as I remembered
her during the war, her fears, connivances and sacrifices, and
especially the way she fiercely protected us against the scourges
of the war.

When I perform with Marcello [Mastroianni], I am the full
moon. And he is the ring around me.

Without my mother's ambition, her drive, I doubt that on my
own I would have pushed myself out of Pozzuoli and into the
frightening world that was faraway Rome.

Being beautiful can never hurt, but you have to have more.
You have to sparkle, you have to be fun, you have to make your
brain work if you have one.

After the [1999] Oscars, I received so much mail and so many
compliments from friends. It's a wonderful feeling that people
like you and have such esteem for you. I'm enchanted that people
talk to me this way. It's like winning the lottery.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, and yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot
visit, not even in your dreams.

You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.
Sophia Loren |
It is well to give when asked but it is better to give unasked,
through understanding.
Sophia Loren |
Life is indeed darkness save when there is urge,
And all urge is blind save when there is knowledge,
And all knowledge is vain save when there is work,
And all work is empty save when there is love.
