Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 2. In his first encounter with Hamlet, Horatio is asked by the prince why he has returned from his studies in Wittenberg. Horatio jokes that he is playing truant from school. He wants to tell Hamlet about the sightings of his father’s ghost but is being a bit cautious at first.
