Let not the creaking of shoes nor the rustling of silks betray thy poor heart to woman. Keep thy foot out of brothels, thy hand out of plackets, thy pen from lenders’ books, and defy the foul fiend.

– William Shakespeare

King Lear, Act 3, Scene 4. Edgar as Poor Tom warns Lear not to let his heart be seduced by a woman, to stay out of brothels, keep his hands off skirts, stay out of debt and defy the devil. Why Poor Tom has a bit of an attitude towards women we don’t know, it may be just part of his insanity act.
