O, I am fortune’s fool!

– William Shakespeare

Romeo and Juliet, Act 3, Scene 1. Using a metaphor comparing himself to "fortune’s fool," Romeo believes that he has been the victim of fate. Romeo has killed Tybalt in a moment of passion after Tybalt slew his friend Mercutio. Romeo feels that he had no choice in the matter but his action was dictated by fate, a force more powerful than him. There is an element of remorse in Romeo’s words. Before Mercutio’s killing he had done everything possible to avoid a fight with him.
