"Can I have the carriage?" said Jane.
"No, my dear, you had better go on horseback, because it seems likely to rain; and then you must stay all night."

– Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 7. The scheming Mrs. Bennet tells Jane to go to Netherfield on horseback rather than in a carriage. This is so that Jane will have to spend the night in Charles Bingley’s home rather than ride home in the rain. There is nothing that Mrs. Bennet will stop at to find a husband for her daughter.
