Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 36. Darcy’s defense against George Wickham’s claims of mistreatment by him has certainly got Elizabeth’s attention. Darcy’s explanation turns out to be very different than the story Wickham told Elizabeth. She realizes that one of them is guilty of gross deception.
