I would not kill thy unprepared spirit;
No; heaven forfend! I would not kill thy soul.

– William Shakespeare

Othello, Act 5, Scene 2. Othello gives time to Desdemona to pray before killing her, so that she can prepare herself to enter heaven and be with God. While intent on murdering her body, he doesn’t want to damn her soul. He believes, wrongly, that she is a sinner who has committed adultery and must confess to avoid being damned to hell. It is clear that Othello still cares for Desdemona, and even loves her.
