O, yet I do repent me of my fury,
That I did kill them.

– William Shakespeare

Macbeth, Act 2, Scene 3. Macbeth falsely claims that he killed King Duncan’s guards in a fit of rage. The audience knows that he killed them to cover up his crime of regicide. Macbeth lies with such ease as he adroitly shifts blame for Duncan’s murder from himself to the guards. This is further evidence of the good Macbeth losing out to the evil side of his character in the struggle within his conscience.
