We have seen the best of our time. Machinations, hollowness, treachery, and all ruinous disorders, follow us disquietly to our graves.

– William Shakespeare

King Lear, Act 1, Scene 2. Gloucester mood has turned decidedly gloomy, having been convinced by his bastard son Edmund that his legitimate son and heir Edgar is plotting to have him killed. Here he speaks in the language of nihilism, saying that the best of times have passed, and from here on in intrigues, hollowness, treachery and chaos will follow us loudly to our graves. Not a very bright future to look forward to!
