All dark and comfortless! Where’s my son Edmund? –
Edmund, enkindle all the sparks of nature
To quit this horrid act.

– William Shakespeare

King Lear, Act 3, Scene 7. Blinded and bleeding after having his eyes gouged out by Cornwall, Gloucester makes this heartbreaking and misguided cry for help to his son Edmund. He calls for Edmund’s natural love to save him from his torture. He is unaware that Edmund is the one who betrayed him to Cornwall and has no love whatsoever for him.
