Fortune, good night: smile once more; turn thy wheel!

– William Shakespeare

King Lear, Act 2, Scene 2. Alone and locked in stocks, Kent settles down for the night. He asks Fortune to smile on him and expresses the hope for a change in his fortune. Fortune’s wheel belongs to the goddess Fortuna, who spins it at random, changing the position of those on the wheel, some suffering great misfortune, some receiving good fortune.
