Kennedy incorrectly attributes this to Dante, author of The Divine Comedy. In Dante’s poem, the neutral souls who never chose a side are sent to neither heaven nor hell. They spend eternity in a passageway in between condemned to follow a blank banner and being bitten by wasps and hornets.
