Jane Eyre, Chapter 7. Jane makes this observation after Helen Burns is flogged by her teacher Miss Scatcherd for something very minor. Using metaphrorical imagery she makes the point that some people can only see the tiny flaws in others, while blind to the full brightness of the person. Some you can just never satisfy – like Miss Scatcherd!
