Jane Eyre, Chapter 26. Dressed in her bridal veil chosen by Rochester, Jane looks at herself in the mirror on her wedding day. She does not recognize herself and instead sees a stranger. She is describing the image she sees as if it belongs to the intruder she saw earlier in her bedroom wearing her veil – Bertha Mason. Bronte is using Gothic imagery here.
