She took my veil from its place; she held it up, gazed at it long, and then she threw it over her own head, and turned to the mirror. At that moment I saw the reflection of the visage and features quite distinctly in the dark oblong glass.

Jane Eyre, Chapter 25. On the night before the are due to wed, Jane tells Rochester how she woke up the previous night to find a strange woman in her room. We hear how the woman takes Jane’s wedding veil from the closet, puts it on her head and turns to the mirror. After gazing at herself she takes off the veil, rips it in two and tramples it on the floor. This foreshadows the existence of Rochester’s wife and that he is already married to Bertha Mason.
