I can live alone, if self-respect, and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.

– Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre, Chapter 19. The orphan Jane has grown into a strong and independent woman, who has learned the value of being alone. Here she tells gypsy Mother Bunches (Rochester disguised) that she prizes her self-respect. Using metaphorical imagery (“sell my soul” and “inward treasure”) she declares that she will not compromise her integrity or morality to buy happiness.
