Tongues of flame darted round the bed: the curtains were on fire. In the midst of blaze and vapour, Mr. Rochester lay stretched motionless, in deep sleep.

Jane Eyre, Chapter 15. After seeing smoke coming from Mr. Rochester’s bedroom, Jane rushes in to discover his bed engulfed in flames and the curtains on fire. We later learn that the fire was started by Rochester’s wife Bertha Mason. This is foreshadowing of the burning of Thornfield Hall by the violently insane Bertha.
