Jane Eyre, Chapter 14. Mr. Rochester gets flirtatious with Jane here, asking if she thinks him handsome. When Jane defiantly and cheekily says “no,” she is speaking the truth as Rochester is not classically handsome. But she is also showing that she is a woman with an independent mind who speaks honestly and refuses to flatter him.
