Still, in the same moment, I saw the prisoner start up, lean across his captor, and pull the cloak from the neck of the shrinking sitter in the galley. Still in the same moment, I saw that the face disclosed, was the face of the other convict of long ago. Still, in the same moment, I saw the face tilt backward with a white terror on it that I shall never forget, and heard a great cry on board the steamer, and a loud splash in the water, and felt the boat sink from under me.

Great Expectations, Chapter 54. This is the moment the law catches up on Magwitch and his escape plan with Pip and Herbert fails. They are on board a steamer headed out of England when a galley ship pulls up alongside. A policeman on the galley identifies Magwitch and demands his surrender. But Magwitch leans across to the other man on the galley and pulls the cloak off him – revealing it is Compeyson, Magwitch’s partner in crime. This leads to the overturning and sinking of the steamer, with Compeyson drowning. Magwitch finally gets his revenge on Compeyson.
