Pip and Herbert are picking Magwitch up by boat on the Thames to move him out of London for his safety. We witness the deep bond of affection between Pip and the convict, as the latter acknowledges what Pip is doing for him. A simile compares Magwitch’s appearance to that of a river-pilot.
