Great Expectations, Chapter 44. When Pip blames Miss Havisham for leading him on regarding the identity of his patron, she quickly puts him straight. Using a “snares” metaphor, she puts the responsibility on him for having deceived himself. And she is perfectly correct. Pip had wanted to believe that his fortune came from Miss Havisham and he was meant to wed Estella. But there was never any evidence of that.
