Great Expectations, Chapter 39. In this pivotal chapter the criminal Magwitch visits Pip in London to tell him that he is his secret benefactor. He begins by extolling the child Pip’s “noble” and principled behavior when he helped him in the marshes while he an escaped prisoner. Magwitch has never forgotten the boy Pip’s kindness and generosity, he says.
