Great Expectations, Chapter 26. The “Spider” is the nickname given to Bentley Drummle by Mr. Jaggers while attending dinner in the lawyer’s house. Jaggers asks Pip who the spider is, because he thinks Drummle looks like one. The metaphor of Drummle as a spider is a recurring one in the novel and it seems an appropriate description given his unpleasant nature.
