“I wish you could put me right.”
– Charles Dickens
Great Expectations, Chapter 17. Pip wishes Biddy could inspire him to love her, to put an end to his ambition to become a gentleman so he can win the unobtainable Estella. As a foil to the emotionally cold Estella, the kindly Biddy is a good friend and companion for Pip. Unfortunately Pip is too blind to Biddy’s qualities as the perfect partner for him. When Pip asks her to put him right, this suggests he realizes he may be on the wrong course, a development that is foreshadowed here.
