Emma, Chapter 26. Mr. Knightley may be upper class and wealthy, but he is not ostentatious or a practitioner of conspicuous consumption. Emma complains that he doesn’t keep his own horses, has little spare money, and doesn’t use his carriage as often as becoming someone of his social rank. Knightley actually prefers to walk to parties and events.
