Poor Harriet! to be a second time the dupe of her misconceptions and flattery. Mr. Knightley had spoken prophetically, when he once said, “Emma, you have been no friend to Harriet Smith.” – She was afraid she had done her nothing but disservice.
– Jane Austen
Emma, Chapter 47. Emma is filled with guilt and regret over the extent of her social errors. On learning of Frank Churchill secret engagement to Jane Fairfax, she is angry with herself for encouraging Harriet’s feelings for Frank. But a shocked Emma is about to learn that Harriet does not love Frank, instead she has feelings for Mr. Knightley. This is another example of Emma’s misperceptions about the people around her.
