Last night I slept, but did not dream. I must have slept soundly, for I was not waked by Jonathan coming to bed; but the sleep has not refreshed me, for to-day I feel terribly weak and spiritless.

– Bram Stoker

Dracula, Chapter 19. The previous night Mina recalls how she experienced a dreamless sleep that is not characteristic of the normal sleep a person enjoys. Not only is she not refreshed by it and instead feels weak after it. It is believed that she fell prey to Dracula while asleep. That night she asks Dr. Seward for an opiate and the chapter ends with her falling asleep. This quote is foreshadowing of the horrific attacks on Mina by Dracula still to come.
