The Canterbury Tales, The Knight’s Tale. One of the oldest gods Saturn finds "in his olde experience" a plan to stop the strife between Venus and Mars. He promises Venus that her knight Palamon will get the girl Emily in the end. Yet he says Mars may help his knight Arcite win the contest. This is foreshadowing the disaster that will befall Arcite after the contest.
