Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 60. The independent-minded, outspoken and spirited Elizabeth tells Mr. Darcy why he was attracted to her. She suggests that he was sick of deferential women who always pandered to his approval. She was different to those kind of upper class women he was used to. Elizabeth is right here, Darcy was aroused by her high degree of intelligence and lively personality, not by any learned accomplishments that women in his circle tended to educate themselves with. One of the main themes of the novel is the nature of a strong and happy marriage. For Elizabeth it is a mix of affection, character and mutual respect.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 60. Elizabeth and Darcy have come a long way since the barbed and awkward conversations they once shared. In this passage the tone is less sparring and combative, and a lot more tender, as they arrive at a greater understanding of each other and themselves. When Elizabeth teases Darcy on why he was so quiet when he came to dinner, he reveals in the brilliant last line, that his shyness was not a sign of coldness but of the deep feelings he had for her.

I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh. Mr. Darcy sends you all the love in the world that he can spare from me. You are all to come to Pemberley at Christmas.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 60. Announcing her engagement to Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth writes a letter to the Gardiners expressing her great joy with her typical Lizzy wit. Now that she is mistress of Pemberley, she invites them there for Christmas.

Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 61. After the marriages of Elizabeth and Darcy and Jane and Bingley, we learn that their lives progress happily, but this is not the case with Lydia and Wickham. They lead unsettled lives, moving from place to place. With Lydia married to a waster, they continue to squander money and live beyond their means. Like the money, their affection towards each other also soon disappears.
