Dracula, Chapter 4. In his journal, Jonathan Harker writes about his imprisonment in Dracula’s castle and his beloved Mina, whom he is unsure he will ever see again. The "monsters" he refers to are Dracula and his three Brides, having learned that they are far from human. He wonders if his only escape is to jump off the high precipice and kill himself and trust the mercy of God.

Dracula, Chapter 5. When Dr. John Seward and Quincey Morris declare their love to Lucy, she turns them down because of her strong feelings for Arthur Holmwood. But she feels sad because she loves the two suitors she rejected as friends.

Dracula, Chapter 5. In her letter to Mina, Lucy is very explicit in describing her affections for Arthur Holmwood. Holmwood is one of three suitors who proposes marriage to her on the same day – along with Quincey Morris and Dr. John Seward. She chooses Holmwood as her fiancé.

Lucy frets at the postponement of seeing him, but it does not touch her looks; she is a trifle stouter, and her cheeks are a lovely rose pink. She has lost that anemic look which she had. I pray it will last.

Dracula, Chapter 6. Writing in her diary, Mina says that Arthur Holmwood cannot visit Lucy because his father is sick in London and he must tend to him. While Lucy frets at this, it does not dampen her spirits or looks. In fact Mina comments on how well Lucy is bearing up and is looking better and healthier.

Another week gone, and no news from Jonathan, not even to Mr. Hawkins, from whom I have heard. Oh, I do hope he is not ill. He surely would have written. I look at that last letter of his, but somehow it does not satisfy me. It does not read like him, and yet it is his writing.

Dracula, Chapter 6. Mina is worried that she has not heard from her fiancé Jonathan, who is a prisoner in Castle Dracula, but she doesn’t know that. She has received word from Hawkins, a one-line note saying Jonathan is leaving the castle, but it doesn’t sound at all like him.

The waves rose in growing fury, each over-topping its fellow, till in a very few minutes the lately glassy sea was like a roaring and devouring monster.

Dracula, Chapter 7. As Dracula’s ship makes its way to the English shores, a newspaper reports how "one of the greatest and suddenest storms on record" batters Whitby. The Count with fifty boxes of earth from Transylvania are washed ashore. The strange storm is symbolic of the approaching evil as represented by Dracula, to threaten the good people of England.

Masses of sea-fog came drifting inland. White, wet clouds, which swept by in ghostly fashion, so dank and damp and cold that it needed but little effort of imagination to think that the spirits of those lost at sea were touching their living brethren with the clammy hands of death.

Dracula, Chapter 7. The storm of the century hits Whitby and during it a mysterious Russian ship called the Demeter is washed up at Whitby carrying Dracula. None of the crew members on the ship survive. The storm represents the coming of Dracula and his evil to the shores of England.

It is a very strange thing, this sleep-walking, for as soon as her will is thwarted in any physical way, her intention, if there be any, disappears, and she yields herself almost exactly to the routine of her life.

Dracula, Chapter 7. Mina describes how she is able to get the sleepwalking Lucy to go back to bed. Lucy is so passive during that time that Mina is able to easily redirect her physically. Many of the women characters in the story also seem to be easily controlled or influenced.

Poor old Mr. Swales was found dead this morning on our seat, his neck being broken. He had evidently, as the doctor said, fallen back in the seat in some sort of fright, for there was a look of fear and horror on his face that the men said made them shudder. Poor dear old man! Perhaps he had seen Death with his dying eyes!

Dracula, Chapter 7. Mina writes in her journal how the elderly Mr. Swales is found dead in the cemetery with his neck broken and a look of fear frozen on his face. Swales had warned people about the dangers posed by Dracula after his arrival to England. It was probably Dracula he saw with his dying eyes, perhaps doing something evil.
