New Paul Simon album 'Surprise' praised as 'best
work in aeons'
"I'm gonna watch you shine, gonna watch you grow.
Gonna paint a sign so you'll always know.
As long as one and one is two.
There could never be a father who loved his daughter more than I love
you."
This is a quote from one of the most popular artists and greatest
songwriters of our time, Paul Simon.
Earlier this year Time magazine called him "one of the 100 people
who shape our world."
The quote is from Simon's most recent album and comes from the beautiful
track Father and Daughter. This tender song is all about how much
a father can love his daughter, and how he would do anything to protect
her.
Aptly titled Surprise the album was released in May and is Simon's
first in six years.
Acclaimed by critics and public alike, it is viewed as Simon's "best
work in aeons" as BBC reviewer Chris Jones put it.
Though in his 60s the singer/songwriter is in great voice on the studio
album, which is produced by Simon in collaboration with Brian Eno,
and he performs some of his finest guitar work.
The Oscar-nominated final track Father And Daughter actually pre-dates
the Eno sessions. It formed part of the soundtrack of The Wild Thornberrys
Movie, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.
