May 22, 2006:
Saddam says he is ready to die and not afraid of execution

"I am ready to die. I am not scared of execution."

Resigning himself to being sent to the gallows, this is what former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein told his lawyer and confidante in an interview his his Baghdad prison.

Saddam, who is on trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, was talking to Bushra Khalil a Lebanese lawyer in her forties.

He told her: "I do not attend this trial to spare my life. I attend it to defend Iraq."

Khalil, who dresses in western clothes and does not wear a veil, is the only woman on defence team. Since the trial began in October 2005 two lawyers acting for Saddam's co-defendants have been killed, a third fled Iraq after an attempt on his life.

In a five-hour interview with Saddam conducted in his prison, he told Khalil that he took the decision to die the day he tried to assassinate Abdel Karim Qasim. This was a reference to the botched coup against a former Iraqi leader that forced Saddam to flee the country in 1959.

Saddam also told his lawyer he did the right thing staying in his country with his people following the invasion of Iraq.

He confessed that he got on well with his American bodyguards, and while they are changed frequently they get to know each other. "I like them and we become friends."

Saddam likes to talk to his lawyer about international affairs and poetry and confided that he had written a new epic work. "I didn't have time to write poetry before, but now I have had the time to become a poet."

A sample of Saddam's poetry:
"My spirit is still standing firm and will not fall,
And in my body runs the blood of the great.
Oh Iraq you are crowned in the heart
And on the tongue you are the poem of the poets.
Oh Iraq misfortune has shaken your sword, so stand tall
And gather your strength without bearing a grudge."
