Worldwide celebrations to honor 250th anniversary
of Mozart's birth
"Music, even in situations of the greatest horror, should never
be painful to the ear but should flatter and charm it, and thereby
always remain music."
This is a quote from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - the most famous
Austrian of all time, and to many, the greatest musical composer of
them all.
2006 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of the prolific musical
genius. It is being honored throughout the world by special performances
from top symphony orchestras, opera houses and TV and radio stations.
Some of the biggest and best celebrations take place in Mozart's birthplace
Salzburg and Vienna where he spent his most creative, successful years.
Mozart was born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria. It was
evident from his earliest years that the world had given birth to
a musical prodigy. He captivated courts across Europe with his dazzling
brilliance as a child pianist. He began composing at the age of five,
and completed his first symphony before the age of 10. He wrote his
first successful opera at 12.
In his short life, Mozart composed more than 600 musical works before
he died in Vienna at the early age of 35, of what is believed to be
rheumatic fever.
Contemporary and fellow Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn described
him as "the greatest composer known to me in person, or by name."
Albert Einstein said of him that "as an artist, or a musician,
Mozart was not a man of this world". Today his sublime music
and unparalled melodies are cherished by millions the world over.
Salzburg is honoring its most famous son by holding a year long of
celebrations, spending millions of dollars on exhibits and entertainment.
Mozart chocolates, liqueurs and commemorative dishware have been launched.
The city will welcome an estimated two million visitors over the course
of the year.
Vienna has lined up a series of concerts and exhibits, including new
productions of Idomeneo and The Magic Flute, two of Mozart's most
famous operas. A new museum in the building where Mozart once lived
has been opened in the city.
