January 26, 2006:
Johnny Depp to play hero in movie version of 'The
Ginger Man' novel
"Mr [Johnny] Depp is something else. He is very bright, extremely
intelligent, and very knowledgeable."
This is how author of the acclaimed novel 'The Ginger Man' J. P. Dunleavy
described the US superstar actor after he met him in New York recently.
Depp is set to play one of the most famous characters in Irish fiction
- Sebastian Dangerfield - and take over the hero's role in the first
ever film version of the 'The Ginger Man.'
Dunleavy rejected repeated attempts by Hollywood to make a film version
of his book, which has sold between 40 and 50 million copies worldwide
and been translated into 18 languages.
His change of heart is said to be related to the casting of Depp,
who greatly impressed him.
'The Ginger Man' was first published in Paris in 1955 and was originally
banned in the United States because it was considered pornographic.
In Ireland the stage play version had to be halted after three performances
in 1959 due to opposition from the Catholic hierarchy.
Brooklyn-born Dunleavy's classic first novel tells the wildly funny
tale of a feckless, womanising American demobbed soldier supposedly
studying law in Trinity College Dublin after the Second World War.
Its hero Dangerfield is a scoundrel with an insatiable appetite for
women, liquor and roguishness, which he satisfies it with great energy
and charm.
In the movie version singer/songwriter Shane McGowan will appear as
Irish author Brendan Behan.
