Top seller Halo 3 fires up $300 million sales in first week

Microsoft has announced that its 'Halo 3' video game fired up worldwide sales of $300 million in its first week, making it one of the year's best sellers and helping to more than double sales of its Xbox 360 console.

The final chapter in Microsoft's series of alien-battling shooting games racked up an incredible $170 million in sales in the US alone in the first 24 hours after its September 25 release.

That makes the 'Halo 3' debut the biggest entertainment launch in history.

"Halo 3 has become a pop-culture phenomenon," said Shane Kim, Corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. "Not only is it setting sales records, it's also redefining entertainment."

The game is vital to Microsoft's bid to establish its dominance in the $30 billion global video game industry that has been dominated by Sony the past few years. Microsoft is also in competition with Nintendo's Wii console, which has enjoyed stronger sales this year.

"Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of 'Halo 3,'" Microsoft said in a statement.

The company sold 277,000 Xbox 360 units in the United States in August and just over 11,000 units in Japan in that month.
