January 30, 2007:
Movie's child rape scene causes stir
"It's not really happening. It's a movie, and it's called acting
- I'm not going through anything."
That is what 12-year-old American actress Dakota Fanning said
in reply to critics of the controversial scene in 'Hounddog' in which
she plays a girl raped by a teenage boy.
The movie had its debut this month at the Sundance Film Festival in
Utah amid protests from some US religious groups.
Before it was screened the New York-based Catholic League demanded
a federal probe into whether child pornography laws were violated
during filming.
'Hounddog' is the story of Lewellen, a 12-year-old girl growing up
in the 1960s South. She is free-spirited, obsessed with Elvis Presley
and has little supervision by her abusive father and alcoholic grandmother.
The scene which sparked complaints of child abuse and calls for a
boycott by some Christians depicts Lewellen, played by Fanning, being
raped by a teenage boy.
The disturbing scene lasts a few minutes but is not graphic. There
is no nudity, the scene is darkly lit and only Fanning's face and
hand are shown.
Director Deborah Kampmeier has defended strongly the film. She said
issues like child rape needed to be discussed in public.
"This issue is so silenced in our society. There are a lot of
women who are alone with this story," she added.
Prosecutors in two states have said that they found nothing illegal
about the movie which was shot in North Carolina. They claimed that
it offered viewers a "good message" about child sexual abuse.
Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff watched the movie with his state's
child sexual exploitation law in hand and said his concerns didn't
materialize on the screen.
"None of the things on the Internet that people were saying about
it were true. Not only does it not violate the statute, I think it's
a good message for people on the subject", he added.
The opinion is shared by the district attorneys in the two North Carolina
counties where 'Hounddog' was filmed last summer.
Rex Gore, the Brunswick County district attorney, said prosecutors
reviewed the movie in November and interviewed crew members, producers
and star Dakota Fanning.
"I am aware that there is an outcry from some who find the content
of the film disturbing and distasteful," Gore said in a statement.
"However, public opinion is not the test we must apply as prosecutors;
we must apply the law."
Dakota Fanning previously played Tom Cruise's daughter in 'The War
of the Worlds' and also starred in 'Charlotte's Web'.
