November 26, 2005:
Soccer legend George Best dies from alcohol-related illness
"I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars -
the rest I just squandered."
The words of football genius George Best, the Belfast-born soccer
legend who died from alcohol-related illness at the premature age
of 59. The former Manchester United player was described by Pele
as the greatest footballer in the world.
Best, as he rightly said of himself, took football off the back
pages and put it on to page one. But he also acknowledged that drink
was the only opponent he was unable to beat. Sadly it ultimately
brought him down.
His incredible ability on the field saw him fulfil every young boy's
dream, taking him from the streets of Belfast to become Man United's
first superstar. His dazzling good looks made him every woman's
dream in the Swinging Sixties. Though he was finished playing soccer
at the highest level at just 26, he left behind a dazzling sporting
career equalled by few.
