When the bride is one
with her lover,
who cares about
the wedding party?
I am not a Hindu,
Nor a Muslim am I!
I am this body, a play
Of five elements; a drama
Of the spirit dancing
With joy and sorrow. Kabir
My body is flooded
With the flame of Love.
My soul lives in
A furnace of bliss.
Fills my mouth,
And fans through all things
With each outbreath. Kabir
Admire the diamond that can bear the hits of a hammer. Many
deceptive preachers, when critically examined, turn out to
be false. Kabir
Don't open your diamonds in a vegetable market. Tie them
in bundle and keep them in your heart, and go your own way. Kabir
A diamond was laying in the street covered with dirt. Many
fools passed by. Someone who knew diamonds picked it up. Kabir
Melting into the sea,
Everyone can see.
But the sea
In a drop
A rare one
can follow! Kabir
Do not go to the garden of flowers!
O Friend! go not there;
In your body is the garden of flowers.
Take your seat on the thousand petals of the lotus,
and there gaze on the Infinite Beauty. Kabir
There is dew
on these poems in the morning,
and at night a cool breeze may rise from them.
In the winter they are blankets, in the summer a place to
I like talking to you like this. Have you moved
a step closer?
Soon we may be
I went looking for Him
And lost myself;
The drop merged with the Sea --
Who can find it now?
Looking and looking for Him
I lost myself;
The Sea merged with the drop --
Who can find it now? Kabir
lift the veil
you will find
what you are
looking for. Kabir
Look at you, you madman! Screaming you are thirsty and dying
in a desert, when all around you there is nothing but water! Kabir
Are you looking for me? I am in the next seat.
My shoulder is against yours.
you will not find me in the stupas, not in Indian shrine
rooms, nor in synagogues, nor in cathedrals:
not in masses, nor kirtans, not in legs winding
around your own neck, nor in eating nothing but
When you really look for me, you will see me
you will find me in the tiniest house of time.
Kabir says: Student, tell me, what is God?
He is the breath inside the breath. Kabir
It is time to put up a love-swing!
Tie the body and then tie the mind so that they
swing between the arms of the Secret One you love,
Bring the water that falls from the clouds to your eyes,
and cover yourself inside entirely with the shadow of night.
Bring your face up close to his ear,
and then talk only about what you want deeply to happen. Kabir
Open your eyes of love, and see Him who pervades this world!
consider it well, and know that this is your own country. Kabir
When you meet the true Guru, He will awaken your heart;
He will tell you the secret of love and detachment, and then
you will know indeed that He transcends this universe. Kabir
Hang up the swing of love today! Kabir
Hang the body and the mind between the arms of the beloved,
in the ecstasy of love's joy:
Bring the tearful streams of the rainy clouds to your eyes,
and cover your heart with the shadow of darkness:
Bring your face nearer to his ear, and speak of the deepest
longings of your heart.
Kabir says: 'Listen to me brother! bring the vision of the
Beloved in your heart.' Kabir
Be strong then, and enter into your own body;
there you have a solid place for your feet.
Think about it carefully!
Don't go off somewhere else!
Kabir says this: just throw away all thoughts of
and stand firm in that which you are. Kabir
Hey brother, why do you want me to talk?
Talk and talk and the real things get lost.
Talk and talk and things get out of hand.
Why not stop talking and think?
If you meet someone good, listen a little, speak;
If you meet someone bad, clench up like a fist.
Talking with a wise man is a great reward.
Talking with a fool? A waste.
Kabir says: A pot makes noise if it's half full,
But fill it to the brim -- no sound. Kabir
My swan, let us fly to that land
Where your Beloved lives forever.
That land is always soaked in moonlight;
Darkness can never come near it.
It is flooded always with the dazzle
Of not one, but a million suns. Kabir
The moon shines in my body, but my blind eyes cannot see
The moon is within me, and so is the sun.
The unstruck drum of Eternity is sounded within me; but my
deaf ears cannot hear it.
So long as man clamours for the "I" and the "Mine",
his works are as naught:
When all love of the "I" and the "Mine"
is dead, then the work of the Lord is done.
For work has no other aim than the getting of knowledge:
When that comes, then work is put away.
The flower blooms for the fruit: when the fruit comes, the
The musk is in the deer, but it seeks it not within itself:
it wanders in quest of grass. Kabir
The light of the sun, the moon, and the stars shines bright:
The melody of love swells forth, and the rhythm of love's
detachment beats the time.
Day and night, the chorus of music fills the heavens; and
"My Beloved One gleams like the lightning flash in the
I laugh when I hear that the fish in the water is thirsty
You don't grasp the fact that what is most alive of all is
inside your own house.

Kabir will tell you the truth: go wherever you like, to Calcutta
if you can't find where your soul is hidden,
for you the world will never be real! Kabir
All know that the drop merges into the ocean, but few know
that the ocean merges into the drop. Kabir
Listen to the secret sound, the real sound, which is inside
The one no one talks of speaks the secret sound to himself,
and he's the one who has made it all. Kabir
The river that flows in you also flows in me. Kabir
But if a mirror ever makes
you should know
that it does
I don't think there is such a thing as
an intelligent mega-rich
For who with a fine mind can look
out upon this world and
what can nourish
the sun is within me and so is the moon. Kabir
I talk to my inner lover, and I say, why such rush?
We sense that there is some sort of spirit that loves birds
and animals and the ants -
perhaps the same one who gave a radiance to you in your mother's
Is it logical that you would be walking around entirely orphaned
The truth is you turned away yourself,
and decided to go into the dark alone.
Now you are tangled up in others, and have forgotten what
you once knew,
and that's why everything you do has some weird failure in
As long as a human being worries about when he will die,
and what he has that is his,
all of his works are zero.
When affection for the I-creature and what it owns is dead,
then the work of the Teacher is over. Kabir
Knowing nothing shuts the iron gates;
the new love opens them.
The sound of the gates opening wakes
the beautiful woman asleep.
Kabir says: Fantastic!
Don't let a chance like this go by! Kabir
Don't go outside your house to see flowers.
My friend, don't bother with that excursion.
Inside your body there are flowers.
One flower has a thousand petals.
That will do for a place to sit.
Sitting there you will have a glimpse of beauty;
inside the body and out of it,
before gardens and after gardens. Kabir
Kabir: mystic poet and saint of
India. He was born in Varanasi (Benares) India probably around 1440
(though some accounts place his birth as early as 1398) and died in
1518. Not easily categorized as a Sufi or a Yogi, he is all of these.
He is revered by Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.
